Laurens, Iowa’s Earl Mackie Memorial pool was constructed in 1955-56. Only through exceptional maintenance and short term repairs has the City of Laurens been able to extend the pool’s life. We now find ourselves at the point where the pool’s age and overall condition has reached a critical stage and each season is now faced with the uncertainty of its continuing operation. This pool has been an important part of Laurens summer recreation for generations, and we would like future generations to continue to learn to swim in a new Laurens pool. |

| Target population and how they will benefit: |
The 1258 citizens of Laurens would be our primary users of the new pool, however we would potentially attract users from throughout Pocahontas County (pop 7310) and even beyond those borders.
Families with children of varying ages would be able to enjoy being together in one, zero depth entry pool, rather than our current baby pool and regular pool. It would also cover that age gap where children are too old for the wading pool, yet unable to touch the bottom of the regular pool.
Citizens of all ages, even those with mobility issues would be able to use the new zero depth entry pool with ease for exercise, socialization and fun!

| Why your project deserves the funds: |
Laurens is the smallest town in Iowa that has a Swim Team. It has run continuously since 1967, so has just completed its 48th season. When we host Swim Meets, our pool is often mocked by the other team as being old, crumbling, too shallow for diving, and just plan “weird”! When our team of 39 travels to other towns for Swim Meets, our members are jealous of the modern facilities with their starting blocks, zero depth entry, and other amenities.

Our plan is to start construction in August of 2015, with our new facility opening in June of 2016. This is, of course, dependent on a successful fundraising campaign. |
