Ringgold County Trailway Extension

The project will be in Mount Ayr, IA 50854. The purpose of the project is to continue the support of wellness activities in our county and promote safety during these activities. The current trailway, maintained by Ringgold County, is two miles spanning from highway 169 east to 250th ave. The proposed project will create an addition to the current trailway of approximately one quarter of a mile connecting north to the Ringgold County Hospital. A benefit in creating this addition is that it will allow for the safety of those that utilize the trail. The parking conditions at the current trail entrance are not adequate for the number of people that use the trail on a daily basis. By connecting the trail to the hospital, more parking will be available. |

| Target population and how they will benefit: |
Our target population would be members of our community (approximately 5,000 people). We hope to embody everyone and promote wellness county-wide. With proven participation numbers in our community, this population seems to be growing. As stated above, one of our main purposes for creating this addition is to allow for the safety of our visitors. By extending the trailway to the hospital, visitors will benefit from the use of the parking lot of the hospital.
Also benefiting from this project will be the local school as they utilize the trailway for safe track and cross country practice. |
| Why your project deserves the funds: |
We are a small southern Iowa county with just over 5,000 people. We have formed a County Wellness Coalition in an effort to promote wellness in our county. This group has been making great strides towards this goal. In April of 2014, the Wellness Coalition was one of 14 cities that hosted a very successful Live Healthy Iowa 5K which brought in 165 participants and 40 volunteers.
The committee, comprised of various community members, meets on a monthly basis planning community events that promote wellness. To allow for the participation of all age groups, the committee will be hosting a golf outing, dodgeball tournament, healthy cooking class and another 5K event. This is just a small list of events the group is working on.
The Ringgold Trailway is one of the most highly utilized areas in the county for outdoor recreation and health and wellness activities. This two mile asphalt trail features healthy motivational signage that displays distance traveled for easy accountability. With over 30 visitors a day, it is easy to see the impact health and wellness has had on our community. |
